A million little heartbreaks

Standard

The first of a million little heartbreaks yesterday.

As I was washing Mariel, I realized that her newborn smell had disappeared, replaced by a new smell. Though no less sweet, it’s different. That newborn smell was so distinct that I can’t even compare it to anything else. There’s no metaphor or simile for it. And like everything we’ve loved and lost, I’ve already started forgetting exactly what it was like.
